EK-350U: the first 3LCD projector with HLD LED

12.03.2019

EIKI EK-350 is one of entry professional projector with brightness 4 500 ANSI Lm and so far unique LED-phosphorus (HLD) light source. It differs from standard bright „office line“ projectors with professional features (HDBaseT, edge blending, advanced Keystone correction feature). The lens is built in and can’t be changed.

Due to use of HLD light source, EIKI EK-350U represents today one of the most promising types of lamp-less projectors and when looked at from a close distance you discover following interesting features:

  • higher reliability
  • improved color reproduction
  • actual need for quality of colors
  • the uniqueness of projector features

For those who are familiar with recent technologies, we submit short answers to these questions.

Shortly on the advantages of EIKI EK-350U

Improved reliability is related to the fact that there is no rotating color wheel which is an essential part of recent lamp-less projectors of DLP/Laser type.

Unique color reproduction is based on color features of HLD light source.

The actual need for color quality is documented also with the standard introduction of two lasers, i.e. two different sources of color.

The uniqueness of features of EK-350U comes from the fact that there are not many HLD models in the market and among them, the EK-350 is distinguished by 3LCD technology which contributes to the quality of colors.

The technology used in EIKI EK-350 in details
Reliability

All advantages of this projectors are related to the new light source. It represents an improved modification of the well-known LED. There are 3 light diodes – red, blue and green. Due to the presence of these three colors, these LED light sources have best in class color reproduction, but its brightness is limited due to limited power of the green diode. HLD LED technology get’s around this problem by generating the green color by a phosphorous element which is lit by a blue diode. This also solves the problem of rotating wheels (parts).

Color Reproduction

Unfortunately, technical evolution and advertisement live in the same world. Switching from xenon to mercury led to the loss of color reproduction quality. Now with improvements to these luminophore light sources, the color reproduction quality returns due to additional light or laser diodes. For instance, the most perfect laser/phosphorus projectors use additional red laser and the most perfect models are using lasers only without luminophores. But there are still problems with eye security.

The most interesting aspect of this question is if this better color reproduction can be seen just by a common eye or if you need a special device to notice that. In all promotional materials, you can read that rec color becomes more bright. But if fact red color does not become brighter but new hues appear on the picture, that were lost before due to the technology. This phenomenon can be seen by comparing the picture of a home TV set with the picture of a LED or HLD LED projector.

Actual need for color quality

It’s obvious that surrogate quality will be always in big demand but if there is a possibility of comparison then it will be less and less considered as a quality solution. From this fundamental point of view the projector EIKI-EK-350U presents a good example for comparison and an illustration of a quality product.

The uniqueness of features of EK-350U

The situation with outstanding color reproduction looks in recent projector world in the following way.

Possibly ideal possibilities to achieve it have only 3 panel/chip projectors with  3 color light source which are used in digital cinema and are very expensive. In economy class solutions with 3 color light source most if them have just one chip and this make EK-350U unique.

This projectors also has unique features that are not related to the light source. By this we mean the projector’s geometric correction capability. All who works with professional projectors immediately notice that combination of picture correction features of EK-350U is unique.
